In the past, hospital facility managers purchased energy from local utilities, with pricing controlled by state regulators. Today, market deregulation, advances in energy technology and a new emphasis on sustainability are requiring hospitals to make complex procurement decisions in what has become America’s most volatile market. These fundamental changes require that hospitals adopt new methods for sourcing energy supply.

The discussion would begin with a brief overview of the profound technological and market transformation that the national utility delivery system is undergoing along with issues particular to New England. The core of the discussion would be an overview of the best practices for energy business planning centered around the recently released ASHE Monograph, Energy Procurement: A Strategic Sourcing How-To Guide, which Hospital Energy co-authored. The discussion will include applying these practices to building resiliency and sustainability for hospitals.

The key concepts underlying the new standards are that energy is a financial market and that financial analytics must drive hospital energy decision-making. In light of the changes to the energy market and the ongoing challenges of the healthcare industry, hospitals should approach energy procurement from the perspective of three best practice principles, Aggregation, Alignment, Analytics set forth in the best practices.

About the Presenter

Steven Jalowiec, PE, CHFM Vice President Engineering Services, Hospital Energy

Steve Jalowiec, is Vice President for Engineering Services with Hospital Energy, a company specializing in energy business planning for healthcare organizations. Steve has more than 20 years of experience at several hospitals, working in facility management and engineering. Along with implementing numerous facility management practices to improve department performance and productivity, his other areas of focus throughout his career have included facility design and engineering, energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, fire and life safety, emergency preparedness and advocating for effective regulations. He is active in various healthcare and engineering organizations including the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), New England Healthcare Engineers’ Society (NEHES) (Past President), Connecticut Healthcare Engineers’ Society (CHES) (Past President), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Steve was the recipient of the ASHE Emerging Regional Leader Award in 2009 and NEHES Engineer of the Year Award in 2008.

Steve is a Licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Healthcare Facility Manager. He is a graduate of the University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
