Hospitals contract with a multitude of transportation service providers, package delivery and freight carriers that move medical, pharmaceutical and office supplies, transport food and laundry, and haul waste – day and night. Practice Greenhealth a leading organization representing institutions in the healthcare community, recently published a new set of procurement guidelines. The new guidelines now include provisions to assess, benchmark and reduce the air quality impacts of transportation by using SmartWay emissions metrics; significantly increasing the percentage of EPA shipper partners used by member hospitals; and to work toward achieving an idle-free campus. Members report these transportation metrics as part of a series of baseline data needed to generate a sustainability benchmarking report, which also covers a broad range of other impacts, such as recycling rates, water use and building efficiency.
