Catching up to Innovation – How Can Regulation Keep Pace?

From Building Codes to FGI Guidelines, regulations have a daily effect on the work we do. With the pace of innovation increasing – clinical as well as construction - how can we ensure that regulations keep pace to encourage innovation? Our interdisciplinary panel will share their perspectives on healthcare trends and the impact on regulations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore specific ways the FGI Guidelines, Building Codes and Regulations are keeping pace with innovations from the varying perspectives of an architect, engineer and owner.
  2. List examples of where more could be done in the FGI Guidelines, Building Codes and Regulations to ensure innovations are considered.
  3. Define specific trends an architect, engineer and owner are seeing in healthcare innovations. Define how the FGI Guidelines, Building Codes and Regulations could support these innovations.
  4. Explain specific ways individuals can get involved with the regulatory process and the impact that their involvement can have on the future of our industry.

Planning for a Resilient Future: Executing a Successful Risk Mitigation Study - The VA Boston Healthcare System Case Study

How do you develop and communicate a risk identification and mitigation plan for vulnerabilities to facilities’ critical systems? This case study will review how to undertake a comprehensive assessment and risk mitigation study – spurred by a burst, frozen pipe that drove the review of 2.7 million square feet on three of the Boston VA’s major campuses.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key internal and external risk vulnerabilities in healthcare / critical care facilities.
  2. Analyze and assess applicable codes, risk ranking, mitigation options, priorities and cost.
  3. Understand how to best organize and communicate risk mitigation findings to varying stakeholder groups, and recognize the role and importance of consistent communication during the mitigation process.
  4. Understand how to scale a risk mitigation effort to facilities of various sizes and complexities.

The Joint Commission Requirements for Medical Gas and Vacuum Systems

This session will provide a synopsis of the newest requirements for medical gas and vacuum systems in existing health care facilities, including an overview of the new Joint Commission Environment of Care standards and the specific Elements of Performance. Further, strategies for planning, implementation, and evaluation of your operation and management programs, including emergency preparedness, for these systems will be discussed, as well as examples of best practices and procedures.

  1. After the presentation, the attendee will be able to understand the Environment of Care (EC) requirements and the specific Elements of Performance (EPs) that apply to medical gas and vacuum systems.
  2. After the presentation, the attendee will be able to describe strategies and best practices for emergency management and preparedness for medical gas and vacuum systems.
  3. After the presentation, the attendee will be able describe maintenance and inspection programs for medical gas and vacuum systems.
  4. After the presentation, the attendee will be able to identify professional qualification standards and training requirements for personnel responsible for medical gas and vacuum systems.

Jonathan C. Willard is the president of AMG Services, which is a comprehensive health care, environmental, research, and laboratory gas and vacuum system service company. He has worked in the health care and institutional construction and service industries for over 20 years. In addition to being one of a handful of individuals holding all of the ASSE 6000 medical gas certifications, he is a principal member of the Technical Committee on Medical Gas and Vacuum Piping Systems (NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code) and a principal member of the Technical Committee on Industrial and Medical Gases (NFPA 55: Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code). He holds a Credentialed Medical Gas Verifier (CMGV©) certification and currently serves on the Medical Gas Professional Healthcare Organization (MGPHO) Board of Directors.

USP 797/800: What You Need to Know

In this session, a panel of experts will discuss the unique challenges of USP 797 and 800 compliance. Erin Higgins, MS, CIH, CSP, Senior Scientist at Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc., will serve as moderator for this discussion. In her role at EHE, Erin provides hospitals with expert guidance to navigate and comply with complex USP 797 and 800 regulations and increase patient safety. The panel will include a wide range of perspectives, from facilities manager to architect to pharmacy services director. As the revisions to USP 797 and 800 are set to go into effect in December of this year, this topic is especially important in our industry today.

  2. Examine the differences between USP 797 and USP 800
  3. Review the facility design requirements of the new regulation
  4. Discuss the unique challenges faced during USP pharmacy upgrades

Erin Higgins, Senior Scientist at Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc., provides hospitals with expert guidance to navigate and comply with complex USP 797 and 800 regulations and increase patient safety. Erin offers valuable insight from her experience working with numerous hospitals, in more than a dozen states, to share the most effective strategies for meeting the challenges of complying with USP 795, 797 and 800. Erin has provided support to healthcare pharmacies, as well as infusion clinics and physician offices through compliance gap assessments, feasibility studies and compliance strategies for healthcare systems, development of facility and engineering controls design and construction standards, and development and implementation of comprehensive risk-based environmental monitoring programs. She has worked with design teams, including architects, MEP engineers, pharmacy and healthcare leadership in the renovation/construction of compliant and operationally efficient compounding pharmacies. In addition, Erin has provided site management for contaminant control and qualifying environmental conditions during and following construction efforts, and interfaces with regulatory agencies on behalf of pharmacies.

Howard I. Cohen RPh, MS, FASHP, is the Director of Oncology Pharmacy Services at the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Health. He is also the President of Safe Medication Management Associates, Inc. He is the former Director of Pharmacy Services for Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Inc. and has also served as the Director of Pharmacy Services at several other major institutions. While at the Smilow Cancer Hospital he has been involved with the design, construction and implementation of several Oncology Pharmacy cleanrooms that are compliant with the standards of USP797/USP800. Mr. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas, School of Pharmacy in Lawrence, Kansas, and his Master of Science degree from Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed an Executive Management fellowship at the Wharton School of Business - Leonard Davis Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1995 he received the designation of Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Mr. Cohen is a member of the Hematology and Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA), The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and several state and local professional societies. He has served as the Editorial Advisor for the Pharmacy Net Guide, has been on the Editorial Board of the P&T Journal and is an experienced speaker on many topics including USP 797/USP800. In 2014 under his leadership the Smilow Oncology Pharmacy was awarded the ASHP Foundation award for Excellence in Medication use and safety. He has authored numerous articles on various pharmacy and hospital decision-making topics and has considerable experience in improving pharmacy organizational leadership and operational efficiencies.
